Red-tailed Golden Asian Arowana;

The Red Tail Golden is the first of the lower priced Arowana to generate true scale colour. It has a distinct Gold outer scale and in premium fish can develop clearly visible base colour as well.

Scientific Name : Scleropages Formosus

Common Names : Red-tailed Golden Asian Arowana, Asian Arowana, Dragon Fish, and Asian Bonytongue

Arowana Care Level : Moderate to Difficult, needs a large tank and is not recommended for the beginning aquarist. Needs a good aquarium filter like an external canister filter.

Size : 36 inches / 90 cm

pH : pH 7.0 – 7.7

Temperature : 75°F - 85°F (24°C - 30°C)

Lifespan : 10 - 20 years or longer.

Origin / Habitat :Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Cambodia

Temperament / Behavior : Can be aggressive, especially with smaller aquarium species.

Breeding : Asian Arowanas are mouthbrooders and are readily bred in large ponds, but rarely in aquariums.

Aquarium Size : 220 liters (55 gallons) and more minimum but preferably much larger tanks. This fish is best left in the wild, in public aquarium displays or with advanced hobbyists with the equipment and space to keep them.

Compatibility : 6 more young can be kept together, but 10 or more is better. The same with adults, but this is a gamble as some adults do not tolerate others of their own kind well. Beside keeping them in schools they should be kept with peaceful to moderately aggressive fish that cannot be eaten and that will not harass the Arowana.

Food : A carnivore - provide a varied diet with pellet food, frozen food and they will definitely accept live food.

Tank Region : Mostly at the top of tank

Gender : There are studies that correlate head size to gender that are 70% accurate. May only be possible to determine gender differences in mature adults Arowanas. Males may have larger mouths since they are mouth breeders.
