Silver Arowana;
The silver Arowana is by far the most common and popular in the United Arab Emirates due to its cheap price and small starting size. You must not be fooled, however, for it can grow up to 2 feet in length and easily break through aquarium glass if it becomes startled or angry.
Scientific Name : Osteoglossum bicirrhosum
Common Names : Silver Arowana, Dragon Fish, Arawana, Aruana, Arrowana, etc.
Arowana Care Level : Moderate to Difficult, needs a large tank and is not recommended for the beginning aquarist. Needs a good aquarium filter like an external canister filter.
Size : 35 - 40 inches (89 - 102 cm)
pH : 6.0 - 7.5
Temperature : 75°F - 83°F (24°C - 28°C)
Lifespan : 10 - 20 years or longer.
Origin / Habitat : South America, Amazon River
Temperament / Behavior : Can be aggressive, especially with smaller aquarium species.
Breeding : They have been bred in captivity. The males carry the eggs in their mouths (mouth brooder).
Aquarium Size : 250 liters (66 gallons) and more minimum but preferably much larger tanks. This fish is best left in the wild, in public aquarium displays or with advanced hobbyists with the equipment and space to keep them.
It’s acceptable to keep young silver arowana in smaller tanks temporary, however, later the fish must be taken into a proper sized tank to avoid the fish body deformation and to insure the fish maximum life span and body length.
Tank Mates : When buying silver arowana to keep it in your tank, keep in mind that this is a predator fish. However, it does well with other tank mates, if they are 3 times larger than it is.
There should be not more than one adult arowana in a tank, since this fish tends to be aggressive to the species of its kind.
Silver arowana can be kept together with other middle-sized tank fish (green terror, black ghost knifefish, parrot cichlid, clown loach, saifin pleco, freshwater angelfish).
Food : A carnivore - provide a varied diet with pellet food, frozen food and they will definitely accept live food.
Tank Region : Mostly at the top of tank
Gender : May only be possible to determine gender differences in mature adults Arowanas. Males may have larger mouths since they are mouth breeders.
